ELECTROMAGNETISM:
Electromagnetism is the magnetism which is developed by electric current.
When a current carrying conductor is electrically charged, it generates some magnetic force surrounding the conductor.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERMANENT MAGNET AND ELECTROMAGNET:
A permanent magnet produces the magnetic field by its inherent property, whereas an electromagnet produces magnetic field when a conductor carrying the current.
The magnetic field strength is normally weaker in case of permanent magnet. But in case of electromagnet magnetic field strength is directly proportional to the flowing current through the conductor.
The strength of field cannot be varied for permanent magnet but for electromagnet field of strength can be varied by varying flowing current through conductor.
For permanent magnet, magnetism properties can’t be turned off and on, whereas for electromagnet magnetism properties can switched on and off by switching the supply current.
Direction of field can’t be change for permanent magnet, but even it can also be reversed by reversing the direction of current in case of electromagnet.
Application of permanent magnet in engineering is less.
Application of electromagnet is huge in engineering for above noted various advantages.
